How Do Clear Image Aligners Work?

Clear Image Aligners are used to improve minor dental discrepancies in the front teeth. The system uses a series of clear, thin, plastic appliances to gently straighten the teeth. The beginning mold your doctor takes is used in the laboratory as the master model. The laboratory then makes a series of progressive changes to the model which are built into each aligner. When you change to the next aligner in the series, your teeth respond to the new corrections and gradually move towards their final ideal positions.

Patient cooperation plays a critical role in the success of aligner treatment. Aligners must be worn for 22 hours per day and are removed only for eating and cleaning. Predictable changes to the teeth happen with consistent fulltime wear!

What You Can Expect

Once your practitioner decides that you are a candidate for Clear Image Aligners, and you begin the process, you can expect the following:

Removing Clear Image Aligners

Patient Care Instructions - Your dentist will give you a wear and home care instruction card. This information includes suggested wearing times, aligner cleaning instructions, and general guidelines for optimum compliance and outcome.

Removing the Aligner - Aligners are removed while eating and brushing teeth, and may be cleaned by using a soft toothbrush with non-abrasive toothpaste and rinsing it in warm water. The patient should always start to loosen the aligner near the molars by simultaneously pushing up or down in a rocking motion on the right and left near the gum line. As the aligner loosens, move the pressure towards the front section until the aligner slides off.

How They Feel - Aligners should fit like a tight glove with no irritation to the surrounding gum tissues. As the teeth move into position, the aligner will begin to feel loose, indicating it is time to start the next aligner in the series. Patients generally wear each aligner in the series for 3 to 4 weeks. There will be some slight discomfort when teeth begin to move just as there is with braces.
